From Raleigh, NC, 19-year-old Frances Eliza is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, currently studying voice at UNC Asheville (‘22) pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz and Contemporary Music. Although studying jazz voice now, she has previously studied classical voice with private instructors in Raleigh, NC, as well as with instructors at Brevard Summer Music Institute and Appalachian State University.
Frances has been performing solo since she was 13 years old, getting her start by performing at local fundraisers and open mics. Having performed for audiences up to 2,000 people, Frances Eliza performs unique sets of originals and covers reflecting her eclectic musical background. Her older sister, Eleanor Mehlenbacher (Duke ‘16) and her have been singing together since she was 4 years old, and the two of them have performed together at events like Raleigh’s March for Our Lives rally against gun violence, Cary’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, Cary’s Young Talent Showcases, and at many other local events. For the past year she has been playing at local breweries and coffee houses around the Asheville area, playing a range of new originals and covers.
Frances blends her love of songwriting with her passion for jazz, classical, bluegrass, and folk music. She takes inspiration from various musical artists such as Amy Winehouse, First Aid Kit, Alice Phoebe Lou, Punch Brothers and Gregory Alan Isakov. Frances has been featured at numerous events, just a few being Raleigh’s SparkCon, the Raleigh March for Our Lives rally, Imurj’s Artist Spotlight series, Asheville’s Echo Fest, and First Night Raleigh Rising Artist Showcase.
Her bittersweet music and raw vocal timbre comes to life in her debut EP “Sleepwalking,” which will be released Friday, December 13th, 2019. During the Fall of 2019, look for Frances performing at various venues in western North Carolina, primarily in Asheville, NC. Starting December 12th, she will be on a mini tour with the band Secret Pool playing at venues across NC, some of which include Local 506 (Ch. Hill), Static Age Records (AVL), and The Pour House (Raleigh).
